🐺🦋Over the past few weeks, Ms. Mayfield’s 6th Grade ELA class has been reading the novel Summer of the Mariposas by Guadalupe Garcia McCall. Mariposas, the Spanish word for “butterflies,” symbolizes the transformation experienced by the characters throughout their journey.
As students explored the novel’s themes of Mexican culture, folklore, family, and personal growth, they also brought the story to life through creative activities. Students created illustrations inspired by the folklore creatures featured in the book and learned about the cultural traditions woven throughout the story. To connect with the novel’s theme of transformation, the class also observed real caterpillars as they transformed into beautiful butterflies or mariposas, as we proudly called them in class. The class celebrated the completion of the novel by releasing the butterflies and recognizing our student illustration contest winners. It was a meaningful way to end a story filled with growth, courage, and transformation. 🦋🐺🦋
Hazel Lord, student-athlete from the University of the Southwest, visited our Employability classes to speak with students about the transition from high school to college and life as a college athlete.
She discussed the importance of commitment, discipline, and time management as key factors for success in college and beyond.
Students were engaged throughout the visit and asked thoughtful questions about expectations after high school.
Hazel is the daughter of 6th grade teacher Brooke Mayfield.
