COLORADO CITY, TX - History has been made in Mitchell County. The Colorado ISD Board of Trustees has been named the 2025 Texas Outstanding School Board by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), the highest honor a school board can achieve in the state of Texas.
The announcement came at the annual TASA | TASB convention, where Colorado ISD was celebrated for its visionary leadership, innovative programs, and commitment to putting students first.
From Region 14 to the Top of Texas
This recognition was the culmination of a remarkable journey. Earlier this year, Colorado ISD earned the title of Region 14 School Board of the Year. From there, the district was selected as one of only five Honor Boards statewide, joining Galena Park, Memphis, Plano, and Temple ISDs as finalists.
But when the final decision was made, Colorado ISD stood alone, named the Outstanding School Board for 2025, a first in district history.
“This is a huge moment not just for our trustees, but for our entire community,” said Board President Emily Strain. “This award shows what’s possible when students are at the center of every decision and when a district works together as one team.”
Why Colorado ISD Shined
The TASB Awards Committee pointed to several standout qualities that set Colorado ISD apart:
Student Voice – ensuring students have a real “seat at the table” in decision-making.
Breaking Barriers – tackling cycles of poverty through expanded CTE, dual credit, and STEM programs.
Innovation – embracing new opportunities from eSports to advanced academics.
Ethical & United Leadership – trustees who model integrity, harmony, and strong collaboration.
Community Connection – strategic long-term planning built on trust with families and stakeholders.
According to TASB, Colorado ISD represents the very best of what public education leadership can be.

Leadership at Every Level
Superintendent Dr. Larry Polk, Jr., who also earned recognition this year as Region 14 Superintendent of the Year, praised the trustees for their relentless commitment.
“From celebrating our eSports team and STEM programs to backing expanded dual credit and CTE opportunities, our trustees understand that achievement takes many forms, and they support them all,” Polk said. “Their leadership has restored pride in our district and renewed belief in what public education can achieve.”
