School Board

On March 4, 2024, the Colorado Independent School District conducted its school board meeting to discuss the latest developments on their campuses. The updates shared during the meeting were informative and noteworthy, reflecting the district's commitment to providing quality education to its students.

During the meeting, Principal Toombs gave an excellent report on the events at CES and CMS campuses. One of the highlights was the update on the AVID students' visit to Angelo State University, which gave them a glimpse of college life. CMS students are exploring different CTE pathways by visiting CHS classes, creating excitement and interest for our middle school students. The after-school programs are thriving, with engaged students. Over 60 enthusiastic students have joined the new After-School Dance Program, and CES/CMS campuses are currently having Learning Walks.

Mrs. Toombs said, "I want to brag on our Board President, Mrs. Strain. She carved out time today to participate in our Learning Walks. During the walks, the AVID representative said she could not believe the growth she had seen since the fall, and the Roscoe Principal said the same thing. The growth is there. It was a great day."

Mr. Komppa, the CHS Principal, provided an update on CHS staffing. CHS is fully staffed, meaning all classes have permanent teachers in place. The instructional walks are going exceptionally well, allowing students to learn and grow in a positive environment. The after-school programs (not including sports) are also thriving, with approximately 40 CHS students actively participating in various activities. One program that has been a big hit with the students is ESports. Overall, CHS is doing exceptionally well and providing its students with outstanding learning experiences.

During the meeting, the Board underwent Bond Ethics Training led by Greg Decker from Gallagher Construction Management. This training taught the Board members ethical guidelines and best practices they should adhere to leading up to the upcoming Bond Election. Mr. Decker provided insights into the "Dos and Don'ts" that the Board must keep in mind to ensure a fair and transparent election process.

The Board approved the 2024-2025 CISD Calendar! It is going to be a fantastic school year, with classes starting on August 14 and the last day of school on May 22. Graduation is scheduled for May 23. The 2024 Convocation is set for August 6, where Dr. Joe Sanfelippo, a sitting superintendent and author of Lead From Where You Are, will be the honorary speaker.

The school board approved moving the April 8 board meeting to April 15. For the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view the Total Eclipse on April 8, Texas is one of the lucky 15 states that can view the longest and most visible total eclipse in the last 100 years.

The Board unanimously approved to change the teacher payday from March 20 to March 8. This decision was made to ensure that the teachers get their payment before the upcoming spring break, scheduled from March 11 to March 15. The school board understands the importance of appreciating its team members and wants them to enjoy their well-deserved break without financial worries.

Superintendent Dr. Larry Polk presented the middle-of-the-year NWEA Reports and expressed his utmost satisfaction. "Looking back to where we started, we are in an excellent position to achieve academic success. With our laser focus on reading and math, we will continue to motivate our students to give their very best rather than simply filling in blanks," he said.

In conclusion, the Colorado ISD school board meeting was filled with positive updates, showing that the district is moving in the right direction. The Board's focus on providing quality education and ensuring the well-being of its staff and students is commendable, and it will undoubtedly lead to a bright future for the district as a whole.
